Tom Haugomat doesn't actually use Adobe Illustrator to make work, he paints with gouache and then uses Photoshop. However, I still think there is a strong emphasis on shape in his work, albeit acted upon in a fairly subtle way. Rather than using a few, bold shapes to create his imagery, as in the case of some other prominent illustrators working primarily with vectors (e.g. Malika Favre), it seems to me that he uses clear cut shapes to make sense of what can sometimes be fairly involved compositions and to delineate areas of light and dark. I find his method of dividing up the environments he portrays using shape and tone all the more impressive given the fact that these elements work in conjunction with such a limited colour palette. Of course, the limited colour palette could have come first and been what forced him into developing such a complex and essential application of tone, either way I find his pictures to be very well considered, aesthetically pleasing surprisingly atmospheric.
